Greenery at the confluence of Sava and Krka rivers, thermal springs, vineyards and rich architectural heritage – this is why Brežice is known to many as the place where different worlds come together.
We will start our trip in the mighty castle of Brežice, a 450-year-old building, where magnificent Knight’s Hall is located, which is a unique example of secular baroque frescoes on the Slovenian territory. We will learn all about the rich history of the town, which dates back to 12th century in the Posavje Museum Brežice located in the castle.
Afterward, the path will lead us through the medieval old town, along some of the more important monuments in the town center. We will make our stop in the Town hall Brežice, where you can enjoy home-made food by local producers, as well as, check out interesting souvenirs and try the so-called “major’s wine”.
After the tasty lunch in the trendy Splavar Hotel, we will drive to Kapele, where you will first be shown a short film about the Jovsi nature park and then be taken to a viewpoint from which we will enjoy the scenery of park itself with its extensive moist and flooded grasslands. Due to the traditional (extensive) farming, only some of its original animal species have remained there, which – according to European measures – are endangered.
After the Jovsi natural park, we will continue our trip to Brezovica na Bizeljskem, where we will visit the famous sand-cellars, called “repnice.” These are in fact caves, dug into flintstone sand that was deposited by the Pannonian sea millions of years ago. These caves have gotten their name after the turnip that people stored in them besides other crops. Even nowadays repnice are sometimes still used for storing crops, vegetables and fruit. However, due to the sufficient climate conditions they offer, they are mostly used for the maturing and storage of wine, as well as the pleasant ambient for wine tasting – we will taste the best of them.
