A two-day trip to Koroška with an emphasis on local culinary experiences and cultural heritage.
Ravne lies in a basin in the lower part of the Mežiška valley and is surrounded by rich forests. In the south it is protected by the mighty Mount Uršlja gora. Since ironmaking is the most powerful economy in the town, Ravne is a specifically urbanized and highly industrial town. The urban architecture of Ravne is enriched by the Forma Vivas – unique sculptures made of steel and iron.
Day 1
Once you are cosily settled in, you will have time to explore Ravne na Koroškem, its sights and the surrounding area.
The urban architecture of Ravne is enriched by the Forma Vivas – unique sculptures made of steel and iron. You will get to visit the 36 sculptures that enhance the architectural image of Ravne na Koroškem and the surrounding area. Afterwards you will visit the Ironmaking Museum – Štauharija which is dedicated to Ravne’s Steel Factory, also named by the locals as the “mother steel factory”.
After sightseeing, you will have a traditional dinner at the local restaurant in the town centre. The restaurant’s meat comes from its own butchery, hence the meat is always fresh and prepared with a touch of love and cosy hospitality.
After dinner you can relax at the Ravne Sport Centre (wellness and swimming pool) and later enjoy some well-deserved sleep.
Day 2
After breakfast you will head out to Ravne castle park, where the Ravne castle (Streiteben) is situated. In the castle is the Dr. Sušnik Central Carinthian Library in which you can find the local studies as well as the cultural heritage of the Koroška region and also of the Austrian Carinthian region. You will also be given a tour of the library.
The tour will continue towards Kotlje and to the foot of Mount Uršlja gora. Here you will visit an alpine cabin called Smučarska koča – meaning a ski cabin. You will be treated with traditional home-cooked Koroška dishes.
A short drive away lies Prežihovina. You will visit the sunny hills surrounding Kotlje, a small village known for its famous writer Lovro Kuhar – Prežihov Voranc. You will take a look at the Prežih farm, which has been transformed into a memorial museum of Lovro Kuhar – Prežihov Voranc (1893 – 1950).
At the end of the tour you will be taken to the town’s centre to a restaurant with years of tradition for a traditional Koroška lunch.
