The trail passes through four upper-Gorenjska municipalities, each of which has added its own small pot of honey to the story. The trail begins in the cradle of Carniolan beekeeping and Slovenian poetry, in picturesque Vrba, where you can visit the birth house of France Prešeren (1800-1849) – Slovenia’s most famous poet, whilst in nearby Breznica stands the apiary of the country’s greatest beekeeper, Anton Janša.
Radovljica is a town of museums and the old town centre is home to the Museum of Apiculture, which is located next to the Lectar Gingerbread Museum and Workshop, which preserves the tradition of making delightful Lectar gingerbread hearts. The trail then leads to Lesce – to the modern Beekeeping Education Centre of Gorenjska, which offers honey tastings and much more!
From Lesce off to Bled and then onwards toward Bohinj, both of which are not only icons of Slovenian tourism but for many years have also been home to numerous beekeepers. In Bled you can stop at a beehive where honey and honey products can be sampled, and then on to picturesque Bohinj where this honey journey ends with a visit to Hotel Kristal in Ribčev Laz, which produces its own in-house chocolate. Among the chocolate delights on offer, a speciality is the ‘čebelica’ cake (from the Slovene word for ‘bee’ – čebela), which is made from raw chocolate with honey and pollen from Bohinj’s flowering meadows.
