Enjoy the hidden corners of Prekmurje

We are two sociable, curious, and adventurous friends who love discovering new places and meeting new people. One of us is Mairna from Russia, and the other is Draženka from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Taking part in Radio Si’s Hidden Gems of Slovenia project was an adventure from the very beginning.

Without knowing exactly what to expect, we set off for Prekmurje, eager to discover what this beautiful region had to offer. Our first stop was the Vinarium Tower in Lendava, Slovenia’s tallest observation tower. Rising above the vineyards and rolling hills, it offers breathtaking panoramic views across Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, and Austria. Standing at the top, surrounded by endless fields, picturesque villages, and distant horizons, was an unforgettable experience that words simply cannot capture.

The excitement continued with the Dual Zip Line, the only one of its kind in Slovenia, allowing two people to ride side by side. Before the ride, we completed a short safety briefing with a professional instructor, which made us feel confident enough to enjoy every thrilling second.

We then continued through the peaceful countryside of Prekmurje, where the fresh air, beautiful landscapes, and rich birdlife made the journey just as enjoyable as the destinations.

Our next stop was Grad Castle, the largest castle complex in Slovenia. According to legend, it has 365 rooms, although not all have been discovered. Our guide, Aleksander, introduced us to its fascinating history while showing us hidden corners, traditional costumes, old musical instruments, and other regional treasures. With hardly any other visitors around, it felt as though we had the castle to ourselves—apart from the bats that live there year-round.

The perfect end to our first day was dinner at Restaurant Raj, where we received a warm welcome and an unforgettable feast. We sampled regional specialties prepared with pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil, traditional potato dödöli, and many other local dishes. The highlight was the famous Prekmurska gibanica, one of Slovenia’s best-known desserts.

The next morning, after breakfast, we travelled to the village of Lončarevci to explore the Pot po močvari (Path Through the Marsh), a wooden trail built by local residents. Our wonderful hosts, Nuša and Maja, guided us through forests and wetlands, introducing us to the area’s unique plants and wildlife. They also shared how the local community works together to preserve its natural and cultural heritage, something we found truly inspiring.

We then visited the Rotunda, one of the oldest surviving churches in this part of Slovenia. Surrounded by local legends, it is said to radiate positive energy, and visitors often describe feeling a deep sense of calm inside. Outside stands a wishing bell, which tradition says grants wishes to those who ring it with sincere intentions. Naturally, we both made one.

Our next stop was Expano, an interactive centre where we discovered more about the Pomurje region through modern exhibits, tested our concentration, and even enjoyed a virtual hot-air balloon ride.

The real highlight, however, came next: an actual hot-air balloon flight. Accompanied by experienced pilot and ballooning champion Jernej, we floated peacefully above the fields, forests, rivers, and villages of Prekmurje. Seeing the region from above was simply magical. The landing, meanwhile, was exciting and perhaps best described as “unexpectedly horizontal,” adding one final adventure to an unforgettable journey.

Looking back, Prekmurje surprised us in the best possible way. It is far more than a destination—it is a feeling. Nature, history, culture, and genuine hospitality come together in perfect harmony. Everywhere we went, we were welcomed with warmth and kindness, making us feel completely at home.

We returned with unforgettable memories, grateful for the experience and convinced that this beautiful corner of Slovenia deserves far more attention than it receives. If you ever have the chance to visit Prekmurje, don’t hesitate. It is a place that will stay with you long after you leave.

One thing is certain: we will definitely be back.
