July 2026

Cycling in the footsteps of Rogatec’s traditional crafts and the Likof na taberhi festival

Our two-day adventure in Rogatec was a great opportunity to discover the cultural heritage, traditional crafts, and beautiful landscapes of eastern Slovenia. From the beginning, we were warmly welcomed and introduced to a region where history is carefully preserved.

One of our first stops was Strmol Manor, where we visited craft workshops dedicated to glassmaking, corn husk weaving, pottery, and hand weaving. We also saw an exhibition of traditional tools donated by local residents, which will be used in future carpentry workshops. The audio guides helped us understand the history of the manor and its role in the region.

Next, we hiked to Donačka Gora, known as the Styrian Triglav. We learned that first Slovenia’s marked hiking trails was established here. The trail led through a primeval forest, and despite the approaching storm, we enjoyed beautiful views of the surrounding hills and nearby Mount Boč. Later, we relaxed at Glamping Podgoro, a peaceful place at the foot of the Donačka mountain, where we could rest after the hike and enjoy the nature.

The second day was dedicated to exploring the region by e-bike. Cycling through picturesque villages and forests, we visited places connected with traditional crafts. Along the way, we saw quartz quarries once used for glass production and the site where a former forest glasswork (glažuta) once stood.

Our journey ended at the lively Likof na Taberhi Festival, where we enjoyed demonstrations of traditional crafts, folk music, local cuisine, and authentic folklore. Meeting local artisans and residents showed us how proudly they preserve their traditions and pass them on to future generations. We finished the day by tasting Sirova zavihanka – traditional Rogatec pastry, a perfect ending to our visit.

This trip was much more than sightseeing. It gave us a deeper understanding of the history, craftsmanship, and local traditions that make Rogatec such a unique destination. We left inspired by the people we met and convinced that this remarkable region is well worth visiting again.
